# Assigning Specialties
Assign service categories (specialties) to staff so they are bookable online for those services.
This page shows you how to assign specialties (service categories) to your staff.
Assigning staff specialties and service categories is a crucial step when you set up SimpleSpa. A staff member is only bookable online for a service if they have that service's category assigned.
## Assigning service categories to staff
1. Go to the [Staff](https://my.simplespa.com/staff.php) page.
2. Click the magic wand button  for the staff member.
3. In the popup, add or remove the service categories that the staff member provides.

## How specialties affect online booking
Adding or removing service categories/specialties changes the staff member's online availability:
* Staff assigned to a category are bookable online for the services in that category.
* Staff not assigned to a category are not bookable online for the services in that category.
